DIAGNE DESPAIR: Baggies miss chance to win against Man Utd

Mbaye Diagne squandered two chances to win the game for West Bromwich Albion as they drew 1-1 with Manchester United.

The Senegalese forward arrived at The Hawthorns on loan from Galatasaray last month and could have made himself a near-instant hit.

Diagne opened the scoring in the first half but, according to his manager Sam Allardyce, almost had a hat-trick.

Conor Gallagher swept in a cross from the right-hand side into the area.

Victor Lindelof could not hold back Diagne as the forward headed home the opener.

Chances rued

But it was the chances he missed later in the game that he will rue.

He once again bullied a Manchester United defender and was 0ne-on-one with David de Gea.

His initial effort was saved and as he went to head in the rebound, the United keeper clawed the ball away.

The second one was even more glorious.

A perfect cross into the box landed at his feet but he couldn't keep his shot on target.

A battling point

West Brom fan Ashley Fox described the point as well-earned but does not expect it to change the club's fortunes.

He still expects them to go down despite any potential confidence boost from this game.

"That's a really well-earned, battling point for West Brom against what was undoubtedly a very strong Manchester United side," Ashley said.

"Whilst I don't think the outcome is going to change the overall course of the season for us, I do think it's pleasing to see us play in the manner we did.

"What was really noticeable for me was the way in which the formation Allardyce picked allowed us to hold off Man United at arm's length."

After this result, Fulham picked up a surprise win away at Everton which put them five points clear of the Baggies.

They are still 12 points from safety and need a minor miracle to survive the drop.
