FOOD BANKS: Now a necessity for many

Food banks are now a lifeline for many in the West Midlands during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Increasing numbers of families have come to rely on food parcels to feed their families as the economic impact of the crisis damages the economy.

During the recent school half-term staff and helpers at St. George’s Primary School in Ladywood joined forces with the Midland Langar Seva Society to hold a food bank which served over 200 hot meals to local residents. In addition over 1,100 bags of food were distributed to the homes of people who were able to benefit from the service provided.

A recent report by the Trussell Trust revealed that there had been a 61% increase in the number of people using food banks between October and December 2020. Their report also revealed that families with children have been worst hit by the effects of the pandemic.

The government has faced increasing pressure to end food poverty with Manchester United star Marcus Rashford heading a high profile campaign for free school meals.
