LOCAL UPDATE: West Midlands Mayor Andy Street fears 100, 000 jobs may be destroyed & Controversy over plans for a traveller’s site in Walsall
West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has warned that over a hundred thousand jobs in the region has been destroyed by coronavirus.
He revealed his concerns in a document of requests to the Chancellor called Getting the West Midlands Back into Work.
There is controversy over a decision by Walsall council to create a facility for the traveller community in Pleck. Walsall South MP Valerie Vaz and a number of councillors have spoken out against the idea. Walsall Labour group leader Aftab Nawaz said “I’m a big supporter of the GRT community and everyone deserves to have their rights respected...there has been no level of communication or consultation and the community feels it's being imposed on them."
Finally, customers at a Morrisons in Solihull had to be evacuated due to a fire on Sunday. It broke out at the freezer section and firefighters attended the scene but thankfully it had already been put out by the time they arrived.
