DAY TRIPPERS WARNED: Police say we will fine you!

Police forces across the greater West Midlands have issued warnings as thousands took advantage of brighter weather  to enjoy a day out.

The blue skies and warm conditions brought many out last weekend, but some broke covid rules by gathering with others or travelling to beauty spots. Now police chiefs have appealed to he public to only head to the nearest park or open space with a reminder that officers will hand out fines if people break the law.

Thousands made their way to Sutton Park last weekend, car parks we full and drivers had to be turned away. Local residents are unhappy at what they see as selfish behaviour by some. Particularly concerning to people from the area was witnessing the number of people congregating to enjoy alcohol together with a lack of social distancing.

POLICE WARNING

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson has warned that “What might feel like an innocent picnic with friends on a sunny afternoon could lead to the loss of a life in the weeks ahead as the virus spreads between groups.”

Staffordshire police say they had to deal with a number of incidents of rule breakers over the weekend – they issued the following statement: "We have received a number of calls about people congregating in outdoor spaces to meet up or exercise and we have attended a number of these reported incidents across the county this weekend.

"We understand that the continuing lockdown measures have had an impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing, especially those without access to gardens.

"However, it is so important that we all continue to work together and continue to follow the government guidelines for the safety of ourselves, our friends and our families.

"The warmer weather is bound to tempt people out to many of our beauty spots, such as Cannock Chase and the Moorlands, but we urge people not to breach the rules and travel significant distances when we all must do our upmost to stay local.

"Please be considerate, stay safe, stay local and help save lives.

GOVERNMENT APPEAL

The government have asked the public to stay safe for a while longer and adhere to the Covid rules. Should conditions be met its hoped that by the 21st of June all legal limits on social contact may be removed. in the meantime, the vaccination programme continues at pace, with the announcement of a new target to offer a first dose of the vaccine to every adult by the end of July.
