RELEGATION DOGFIGHT: Baggies held at home by Newcastle United
West Brom were unable to ease their fears of relegation as the Baggies were held to a goalless draw by fellow strugglers Newcastle United at the Hawthorns.
The game was very much a non-event between two sides who are in desperate need of points to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Mbaye Diagne had the best chance for the Baggies when his header was tipped behind by Martin Dubravka, while Matt Phillips fired over when well placed early in the second half.
The draw means West Brom stay 19th and are now eight points from safety whilst the visitors moved above Brighton and in to 16th.
Whilst Sam Allardyce’s side have become better defensively in recent weeks, the Baggies have scored just two goals in their last five games and the manager told BBC Sport that they must start to turn draws in to wins:
"[The result is] not enough obviously but we have to carry on trying to win games of football when they come round.
"The players need to keep their chins up and play like they are playing. The only thing missing is converting the chances we create - we have got the defensive side of it spot on now.
"We certainly had enough chances to accumulate 12 points in the last few games and not just four.
"We have been so close yet so far. That is the story of everything."
