FRAUD FEARS: West Midlands Police are urging people to stay safe when selling online
West Midlands Police are urging people to stay safe when selling online as con artists look to pay for items with fraudulent cheques.
On a post on their website, West Midlands police say residents across the region have so far been conned out of £125, 000 due to a scheme in the last 6 months in which a con artist will contact a seller on a website such as Ebay or Gumtree and offer to purchase before bank transferring a fraudulent cheque into the victim's account.
DC Edward Spokes, from the Economic Crime Unit, said: “The closure of non-essential shops has meant more people are buying and selling their goods online and unfortunately fraudsters are finding ways to take advantage of people even during this difficult time.
“Anyone selling goods online should check with their banks that any payments have cleared their accounts before handing over goods. Funds shown as pending in the account do not necessarily mean that the payment has been completed.”
