The Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham will be celebrating getting back on the water and the start of the new season with an open day for visitors at Birmingham Sailing Centre on Saturday 24th April.
The club, based at Bartley Sailing Club in Bartley Green, runs RYA courses, training and activities for all ages and the open day from 10am-4pm will offer sailing, paddleboarding and kayak taster sessions.
Benn Freeman, ASC Birmingham Centre Manager, said: "Following the year of lockdowns and restrictions that we have had it is great that we are finally able to open Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham. The centre in Birmingham will give the population of Birmingham and the wider Midlands the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy time being active with family and friends, it will also give many the opportunity to try something new.
“I am very much looking forward to welcoming the community of Birmingham to the centre on Saturday 24th April to give them a taster of the exciting activities we can offer."
The centre is also all set to inspire the next generation after officially gaining RYA OnBoard recognition for its work with children and young people, making it part of a national grassroots scheme run by the Royal Yachting Association, which gives eight to 18-year-olds the chance to discover sailing and windsurfing through low-cost opportunities.
In addition to the benefits of having fun in the fresh air outdoors, OnBoard helps to develop key life skills in young people - including confidence, teamwork, communication, determination, independence and creativity - and as an RYA OnBoard centre, ASC Birmingham aims to make it as easy as possible for children to get on the water.
Parent Justin Toolan, whose children Maisie aged 14, and Robyn, 17, both enjoy sailing with ASC Birmingham, said: “As a family with both parents working full-time, we have always needed to use holiday camps. Since starting at ASC youth camps, the children have loved it from day one! They have met new friends and learnt so many new skills both on and off the water with the multiple activities offered.
“As parents, we’ve seen an increase in their confidence through the many watersports taught and their enjoyment of sailing. In 2021, with the impact of Covid-19 and home schooling, it is even more important that the children get back on the water for their own physical and mental wellbeing. A day of fun on the water can change a young person’s perception on life and any issues dramatically. We are so pleased to have such a fantastic relaxed safe camp nearby with good facilities and excellent kit, run by a very experienced fun team.”
Watersports were among the first sports to be allowed back when government restrictions eased after lockdown three and ASC Birmingham is already up and running with a wide variety of courses and activities for both adults and children.
Simon Hardiman, Commodore at Bartley SC, added: “Bartley Sailing Club are very excited with the opportunities that Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham brings and look forward to welcoming the local community to the open day to showcase what is on offer in terms of watersports courses and the sailing club as a whole.
“Part of our business plan for Bartley Sailing Club is to make watersports more accessible and inclusive, offering opportunities for beginners through to experts for people from all backgrounds. The partnership with the Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham is a key enabler, offering training and coaching for all ages and abilities and a pathway into lifelong enjoyment of watersports through membership of the sailing club.”
To ensure a Covid-secure open day, would-be visitors are invited to book in advance for taster sessions.
There are two-hour sailing sessions available at £5pp; 45-minute SUP (paddleboarding) sessions in partnership with Bartley SUP, also £5pp; plus free sit-on-top kayak sessions, which are bookable on the day.
