BOLDMERE: Still thriving despite the pandemic
Major town and city centre retailers have been hit hard during the pandemic, but what about our local High Streets.
It has been reported that many people are now shopping locally more often, but is that really the case?
Boldmere in Sutton Coldfield continues to be something of a retail success story. There are 105 independent stores along it’s High Street. Five did close for good during the pandemic, but two new stores are about to open.
Liz has run a successful gift store in Boldmere for just over seven years with another branch opened in Solihull two years ago. She says government support has been vital in keeping the business going.
Both the greengrocers and carpet store have seen an increase in business but it’s been more difficult for Edge Menswear as fewer eventstaking place, such as weddings and holidays has resulted in reduced demand for new clothing.
The last 12 months has seen a shift in the way we shop, behaviour such as the move to online have been accelerated and according to industry body the British Retail Consortium, local shopping is also on the rise, and that’s something that has been seen in the local greengrocers.
A report by PwC revealed that over 17,000 chain stores closed last year, Boldmere with mostly independedents has however fared better with only a few stores shutting down for good.
