HGV CRISIS: Staffordshire school dinner shortages

HGV CRISIS: Staffordshire school dinner shortages

School dinners are being hit by the national shortage of lorry drivers and foreign food delays – due to Brexit and Covid-19.

National caterer Chartwells has outlined the current issue in an email sent to schools.

StokeonTrentLive has seen its email to William Amory Primary School, in Blythe Bridge. The school has shared it with parents.

The Chartwells email warns: “As you know we are still in unprecedented times due to Covid-19 and Brexit and, as a company, we are working through this the best we can.

“So we would like to keep you abreast on what is happening with Chartwells and how this may affect your school and the meals we provide.

“As you know there are major shortages of food from abroad and a severe shortage of HGV drivers in this country at the moment.

“So not only do we have shortages each day of our food orders, the suppliers are struggling to get the orders to the schools, and this is nationwide for all food distributors as you know as this is also affecting the supermarkets.

“We are trying each day to ensure that your school has food to feed your pupils, but at times we may have to amend and change the menu at short notice due to these shortages.

“We will endeavour to notify you as soon as we know when we have to do this, but please bear with us during this time.

“We have notified all catering managers to let you know as soon as a change occurs, and the key message to all our staff is to ensure all pupils receive a meal each day.

“Many thanks for your patience at this time and we hope to get deliveries back to normal as soon as possible but obviously this is out of our hands but we will manage this at our level the best we can.”

William Amory Primary School is not commenting on the contents of the letter.
