Man charged with racially abusing West Brom midfielder & WMCA launch campaign to help shoppers feel safe.

A 49 year-old man has been charged with racially abusing West Bromwich Albion midfielder Romaine Sawyers online. Simon Silwood from Kingswinford is accused of sending Sawyers an offensive message back in January.

Next, the West Midlands Combined Authority has launched a campaign to highlight the measures local businesses are taking to make their premises Covid-secure. ‘Open for Business, Safely’ aims to to help make shoppers and workers feel more confident when venturing out following the lifting of some restrictions. Traders are being encouraged to use the hashtag #WMOpen4Biz to share on social media details of the preparations they have made so they can invite customers and members of staff back on to their premises safely.

Julia Goldsworthy, the WMCA’s director of strategy, said: “The West Midlands is Open for Business and by following Government guidance, all of us can now shop and work safely. No one is better placed than business to demonstrate the measures they have put in place to make sure they are COVID-secure and to promote what they have to offer. This campaign aims to show how businesses have worked hard to prepare for the second step of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown and that residents and workers alike can feel confident in their efforts.”

Finally, Trade Union Congress Midlands Regional Secretary Lee Barron has said 'we must not drop our guard on workplace safety'. He warned that, "If workplaces are not Covid-secure, coronavirus cases could spiral out of control again. There are some parts of the Midlands that have been under some form of restriction much longer than others and although they will be, understandably, eager to reopen quickly, we must make sure that those workplaces are ready to reopen safely for their employees and the public.
