Fire safety concerns were raised over a proposed new licence to sell alcohol at a barber shop.

The Shed Barber Shop, Manor House Road, Wednesbury, once a betting shop, has applied for a new licence to sell alcohol between the hours of Monday – Wednesday 10.00 – 20.00, Thursday – Friday 09.00 – 21.00 and Saturday 08.00 – 20.00.

These times are applicable to opening hours for the general public.

But issues over fire safety regulations were raised at the licencing meeting, held on October 18.

The issues identified were in regards to the fire alarm system, emergency lighting and fire resisting construction between the ground and first floor being inadequate.

The committee heard the drinks are for customers to enjoy while waiting for their barbering services.

In the application, it stated “no time will any drinks be permitted to leave the premises”.

The sale of alcohol is for the barber’s customers, for the purpose of having haircutting and/or grooming services, to ensure the sale of alcohol shall be “entirely ancillary” to barbering services.  Alcohol will also be sold to people who are waiting with a customer.

“It is a barbershop with a bar, not a stand-alone bar”, according to the application seen by the licencing committee.

No advertisements will display alcohol on sale at the barber shop.

The licencing committee have adjourned the meeting until December 13.
