SANDWELL: Repairs to begin at Wednesbury clock tower

Repair and restoration works will begin on a historic clock tower in Sandwell.

Wednesbury Clock Tower, located in the heart of the town centre, will under go repairs to the clock and removal of unwanted vegetation.

The repair and refurbishment of the clock tower will enable detailed conservation work to take place. It comes after preliminary ecological survey in August 2021 identified the Grade II-listed tower was occupied by Pied Wagtails, which were expected to leave their nests in October.

A further ecological survey to see if roosting bats are nestling in the clock tower will begin on November 22.

The works are expected to be completed by Spring 2022.

Built in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of George V, the red brick and sandstone tower was designed by local architect Charles William Davies Joynson.

Representatives from Smith of Derby, a specialist historic clock maker, will remove the clock’s mechanism and face for repairs to ensure when it is re-installed it gives accurate time.

The works, in conjunction with Historic England, are part of a £3.6million regeneration scheme to improve Wednesbury, in an area called the Wednesbury High Street Heritage Action Zone (WHSHAZ).

Cllr Iqbal Padda (Labs, Greets Green and Lyng), and cabinet member for regeneration and growth, said: “The Wednesbury clock tower is physical and cultural landmark that is important to local people and a key part of our heritage.

“The works to repair and restore the clock tower, when completed in spring 2022, will enhance and preserve that heritage, future-proofing it for generations to come.”
