DIAS DISTINCTION: Ruben Dias named Footballer of the Year
Manchester City's Ruben Dias has been awarded the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award.
The centre-back has played a pivotal part in City's regaining on the Premier League title this season.
He signed for Pep Guardiola's side in September for a fee reportedly around £60million.
After losing stalwart Vincent Kompany, City had been lacking a leader at the back. Dias has taken that mantle.
He formed an outstanding partnership with John Stones for most of the campaign.
Their form helped the club jump from 11th in November, to top at the end of the season.
City have conceded just 32 goals in the league this season and no team has conceded less.
Chelsea are closest with 34 and they face off in the Champions League final later this month.
Award reflects togetherness at City - Dias
The Portuguese appreciated winning the award but was recognise the part his teammates played this season.
"It is a huge privilege. Obviously, I could not have done it without the success of the team," said Dias.
"I think me receiving this prize is the major example of how our team works, the way we build our game.
"It reflects all the togetherness we have on the pitch, how we perform and the spirit that is in the team and with these players."
He finished ahead of Harry Kane and fellow Manchester City player Kevin De Bruyne to win the award.
Ruben Dias becomes only the third player to win FWA Footballer of the Year in their first season.
He'll hope that's not the last trophy he wins this season.
