Everton saw off Southampton in a 3-1 win last Saturday, despite having numerous players unavailable.

Among those missing, was last season’s star signing James Rodriguez, who alike four other teammates had to isolate.

Whilst speaking to the media, Rafa Benitez confirmed that after missing last weeks game, Moise Kean would be returning for the Leeds game.

Benitez stated: “still we have some issues, but Moise Kean is the one that is coming back at the moment.”

Ben Godfrey, Andre Gomes, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin and Gylfi Sigurdsson were the other players not involved last weekend.

On the topic of Kean and Rodriguez, the Everton boss was question on whether they’d still be at the club when the transfer window closes.

Rafa responded: “Until the end of August, until the last day, the last minute, (there will be ) a lot of speculation.”

The Spaniard remained quiet on transfers:

“We have to keep working with the players that are here and available, and that is it, the only thing that I can say.”

There already has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of James Rodriguez, with many rumours suggesting he could be leaving Merseyside.

Benitez when questioned on the Colombian international, and whether he was in his plans stated:

“Until the August 31, yes he’s in my plans.”

As for incoming players, Benitez surprised the press by revealing the club had signed veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

The 37-year-old, was with old rivals Liverpool during the 2019-20 season, before moving on to Stoke and West Brom.

The keeper joins the Toffees on a deal which runs until the end of this season.

So, why bring the veteran keeper in?

The Everton manager said at his pre-match press conference:

“We have an injury to (Harry) Tyrer, the young keeper, and then we signed Andy Lonergan as a back-up, as a player that can give us some experience, because we needed to sort out this problem just in case.

Everton face Leeds United, at 3pm, this Saturday, the Toffees first trip on the road this season.
