LAST EIGHT: T20 Blast quarter-finalists confirmed
Birmingham Bears, Yorkshire Vikings and Somerset are among the T20 Blast quarter-finalists after the group stage was wrapped up on Sunday.
The 18-team domestic T20 cricket competition has been whittled down to the last eight after the group stage was wrapped up on Sunday. Nottinghamshire Outlaws, Yorkshire Vikings, Lancashire Lightning and Birmingham Bears progress from the North group whilst Kent Spitfires, Somerset, Sussex Sharks and Hampshire Hawks made it through the south group.
Birmingham Bears secured the fourth qualifying spot in the North group after they beat Northamptonshire Steelbacks by 14 runs at Edgbaston with Chris Benjamin hitting 60 runs. They still needed a favour from Leicestershire Foxes who duly obliged by beating Worcestershire Rapids to allow the Bears to go through.
Yorkshire Vikings secured a home quarter-final by finishing 2nd in the North Group despite losing the Roses derby to Lancashire Lightning on Saturday, a result which saw Lightning qualify for the quarter-finals. Yorkshire set 128-7 from their 20 overs and Lancashire chased it with 6 balls to spare.
In the south group, Somerset also secured a home quarter-final after beating rivals Gloucestershire in the ‘Cider derby’ by 23 runs, a result which saw Gloucestershire depart the competition. Somerset were struggling to post a total before Tom Lammonby struck 90 from just 36 balls to set Gloucestershire 184 to win but the visitors fell way short.
That result allowed Hampshire Hawks to sneak through after they thrashed Glamorgan for their third win in three days. Glamorgan set what looked a challenging 185 to win but Hampshire needed just 13 of their 20 overs to chase it with D’Arcy Short hitting 69.
The T20 Blast quarter-finalists will now play each other in the last weekend of August for the right to be at the ever-popular T20 Finals Day in September
