LIGHT WORK: Norrie beats Kyrgios at Atlanta Open

LIGHT WORK: Norrie beats Kyrgios at Atlanta Open

PA Jon Super

Cameron Norrie made light work of Nick Kyrgios to reach the quarter-finals of the Truist Atlanta Open.

Norrie needed less than a hour to dispatch his Australian opponent with a clinical 6-1 6-4 win.

The third seed won the first four games and served to love to seal the first set while a break for 5-4 helped the British number two to victory and a meeting with Emil Ruusuvuori in the next round.

It was Norrie’s 36th match victory in 2021, with only Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic winning more.

Finland’s Ruusuvuori went through after seventh seed Benoit Paire retired injured while down 4-6 6-4 3-0, John Isner saw off Jack Sock 7-6 (6) 6-4 and second seed Jannik Sinner fell to Christopher O’Connell 7-6 (7) 6-4..

Elsewhere, Arthur Rinderknech’s best season to date continues to go from strength to strength after he reached his first ATP Tour semi-final at the Generali Open.

The 26-year-old Frenchman defeated third seed Filip Krajinovic 6-4 6-1 in Kitzbuhel after 80 minutes on court.

Rinderknech will play top seed Casper Ruud in the semi-finals after the Norwegian saved a match point to overcome Swede Mikael Ymer in three sets 3-6 7-6(5) 6-1.

Ruud has been dominant on clay this month, winning back-to-back titles at the Nordea Open and the Swiss Open Gstaad, and he will look to reach another final on Friday.

Daniel Altmaier defeated Gianluca Mager for the second time in as many weeks to reach the last four.

The German, who beat Mager on the way to the semi-finals at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, repeated the feat on Thursday with a 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3 victory.

The world number 135 will play Pedro Martinez after the Spaniard, 24, sealed his first appearance in an ATP Tour semi-final with a 6-2 6-2 win against qualifier Jozef Kovalik.
