PAIN FOR SPAIN: Morata and Olmo miss penalties in semi defeat

Alvaro Morata and Dani Olmo both missed penalties as Spain lost their EURO 2020 semi-final to Italy on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Morata had equalised for Spain after coming off the bench to cancel out Federico Chiesa's opener in the second half.

However, he would go on to miss what turned out to be a decisive penalty as Jorginho slotted the winner from 12 yards on the next kick.

The former Chelsea striker has been subjected to criticism already this tournament for missing chances and hasn't done himself any favours with this miss.

His family have received death threats early on in the tournament which is not acceptable and the hope is they'll avoid a repeat.

Spain had never failed to win a semi-final at a major tournament until this one where Italy avenged their last four defeat in EURO 2008.

After a slightly slow start, Luis Enrique's team bucked up their ideas and dominated possession in this clash.

Pedri completed 100% of his passes in a game where Spain controlled the ball.

Yet the Italians were happy to concede the possession battle and employed counter-attacking tactics to get through.

A more clinical striker for the Spaniards may have been the difference - or an earlier introduction of Gerard Moreno may have helped.

Morata may not be the long term answer for Spain, but death threats are uncalled for.
