SEASON PREVIEW: A look at Birmingham City before the new season

We take a look at Birmingham City ahead of the new season as the Blues prepare for another season in the Championship.

It will be Lee Bowyer's first full season in charge (if all goes to plan) after he arrived at the helm in February to guide Birmingham City away from relegation trouble and an 18th placed finish in 2020/21.

It has been a quiet summer for the Blues in terms of marquee signings as was expected with all the noise from the club being that money is tight but they have brought in seven new faces so far without paying a transfer fee. They have also changed their staffing structure with Mark Kennedy the new assistant coach.

Birmingham City's main problem last season was scoring goals with only 37 netted in their 46 league games. As well as the positive of holding onto last season's top scorer Lukas Jutkiewitz, they have brought in Charlton's Chuks Aneke who got 15 goals in League One in 2020/21. That adds to striking options which also include Adam Clayton, Scott Hogan and Jeremie Bela.

One of the positives of the season was the centre-back pairing of Marc Roberts and Supporters Player of the Year Harlee Dean and Blues fans will be pleased to be heading into the season with those two still at the club, especially with their threat from set-pieces having both bagged four goals each last year.

The biggest headline signing is probably taking Manchester United's Tahith Chong on loan. The Dutchman impressed in United's youth team but the 21 year-old only has one more year left to prove himself worthy of a new contract. That work will now be done under Lee Bowyer's stewardship.

Overall, the Blues haven't really lost any key players and will fancy that they may have made some shrewd signings but given the financial restraints, anything other than another relegation battle would probably be an over-achievement.
