SIX POINTER: Blues pick up crucial win against Rotherham United

Birmingham City took a huge step towards Championship survival with a win in their relegation six pointer against Rotherham United.

Harlee Dean’s header with just two minutes remaining was enough to separate the two sides at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Lukas Jutkiewicz had gone close with headers in either half for the Blues but it was Rotherham who had the best chances during the game.

The home side went close three times at the start of the second half as Gary Gardner hacked off the line, Lewis Wing had a shot blocked and Michael Smith headed onto the roof of the net.

Birmingham battled on and got their reward late on with the result leaving them nine points above the relegation zone.

Bowyer Bounce

Blues manager Lee Bowyer has now collected 13 points from his first six matches in charge of the club and eased relegation fears:

"To put that nine-point gap between us and Rotherham is a massive result,” Bowyer told BBC Radio West Midlands post-match.

"It is another clean sheet and it was hard-fought, as Rotherham asked us a lot of questions, but the players were resolute again.

"You have two teams at the wrong end of the table who don't want to make any mistakes and lose the game. It was tense at times and thankfully we got the goal.

"It was mad it was the three centre-halves, with one crossing it and one flicking it on for the other one to head in."
