CLEAN AIR ZONE: Birmingham’s scheme is LIVE with an £8 charge for non-complaint cars
Birmingham’s clean air zone went live this Tuesday. Users of the most polluting cars will have to pay £8 to enter the city centre.
The hope is drivers will use more environmentally friendly modes of transport.
Certain private cars and vans (mainly older models) which do not meet emissions standards will incur a daily £8 charge. Buses, coaches and lorries, which do not comply with the requirements, will be charged £50. It will operate 24-hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year and covers an area which falls within the A4540 Middleway (but not the Middleway itself) including most of Birmingham city centre.
To find out if you will ne charged you will need to input your details in the governments vehicle checker. And for Birmingham the start of a new journey – one that’s is perhaps less reliant on the motor vehicle.
