YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT: What measures are you taking to reduce your environmental impact?

Helping the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

Climate change is happening and many people are looking to make changes to their lifestyle to try and do there bit for the planet, but new research suggests we don’t have a good sense of what the most effective things we can do are.

The most striking finding of the YouGov research is how much Brits underestimate the environmental impact of having one fewer child. Studies have suggested having one fewer child could reduce carbon emissions by between 23 and 120 tons a year, which is by far the most significant action people could take on an individual level.

The study also revealed that many people think reducing the number of plastic items purchased would be one of things to have the biggest impact, with studies suggesting this could save a relatively low 0.02 tons of carbon per person per year. Things like reducing food waste, hang drying clothes instead of using a tumble dryer and taking one less long-haul return flight per year is likely to have a much bigger impact. Other things people can do to reduce their carbon footprint include cycling or walking instead of driving, using public transport instead of a car and reducing meat consumption.

Are you concerned about climate change? Are you doing anything to reduce your carbon footprint? Should people be encouraged to have one less child to help? Should there be more education on things you can do to reduce carbon emissions?
