Work to create a fantastic new £375,000 adventure playground in the heart of Tamworth’s Castle Grounds will begin this next week.

Designs from the winning contractor, Wicksteed, reveal what families can expect from the brand new play area, which includes equipment for youngsters aged three to 14.

Children will be able to play the day away on a huge variety of swings, slides, seesaws, towers, roundabouts, climbing frames, climbing walls, monkey bars, trim trails, action spinners, buddy board, tee pees and loads more.

The new playground also has a much bigger focus on inclusivity with many elements that can be enjoyed by children of all abilities. This includes a wheelchair accessible roundabout, supported swing seats, wheelchair access ramps and a variety of sensory play boards, including human-powered kinetic energy play panels.

In keeping with the castle theme to tie in with our historic Tamworth Castle which overlooks the play park, the new equipment includes bespoke castle-themed structures at the centre, complete with turrets. Visitors will be welcomed to the park through a castle gate design.

The current playground will close from Monday, May 24 and the work is expected to take around eight-10 weeks; weather permitting and if all goes to plan. The main aim will be to get the new playground open in time for the summer holidays.

Cllr Robert Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “The current playground has been a much-loved and iconic play area, creating happy memories for many thousands of children.

“Obviously this does mean that the play area is going to be closed for the next couple of months while a new play area is built ready in time for a bumper summer of fun in the Castle Grounds.

“The new design from Wicksteed has something to offer all children, including those with additional needs or disabilities. We also wanted to make as much use of the space as possible and the new layout packs in loads of swings, slides, climbing frames and other multi-use equipment, so more children can enjoy the park at one time.

“With the brand new Battle and Tribute exhibition in Tamworth Castle, the new outdoor gym, table tennis tables, new benches and picnic tables, the Pavillion Café, Castle Kiosk, a busy events programme, including regular live music from the bandstand, plus town centre shops, bars and restaurants nearby, the Castle Grounds really will be a great day out for Tamworth residents and people from a wider area.”

Adam Brookes, Area Sales Manager, Wicksteed Playgrounds, said: “We are delighted to be selected by Tamworth Council as the preferred partner for the redevelopment of the Castle Grounds play area. The design caters for a wide range of ages and abilities to bring a significant benefit to children’s well-being.

“The equipment has been chosen to provide inclusivity, challenge and social interaction for users. The centrepiece of the play area is a large bespoke castle unit with many play features for children to enjoy hours of play. We are very proud to be working with Tamworth Council on this project and we look forward to children having many years of fun and making memories.”
